the true art of moving mountains

I used to be an all or nothing believer.   I know this because all or nothing is still my natural tendency.  It is so difficult for me to just do a little at a time.  I still can't get my head around it most of the time, but I do know and have experienced that a little at a time creates a stronger presence.  The analogy of water on rock is really helpful for me.  I remember mentioning this analogy in discussions with colleagues and friends years ago.  Last year, I wrote this motto and it has stuck with me ever since: "An avalanche of water won't make an impression.  A consistent drop of water will...create everyday."

I think many of us believe that we need to move a mountain in order to make a statement.  We spend so much time thinking how or when this might happen that we don't start.  I was talking to a close friend yesterday and these words came out of my mouth: "...just start even though you have no idea what you are starting".

I thought a lot about what I could start yesterday without knowing what I was starting.  It's really a different approach, isn't it?  It's so funny because we tell ourselves we need to have this in place, that in place, a clear vision of where we are going, etc.  The funny thing is, in the long run, these are just procrastination methods.  This is just our attempt to live under the illusion that we have control.

I say follow the energy and don't ask yourself why.  Just follow that energy a little bit everyday.  Get help in doing this.  It's one of the hardest things I have ever done. I seek help daily. Follow your  energy (some may call this intuition) without having any idea where the energy is heading. Do a little bit.  Find some help.  Do a little bit more.  Get comfortable with this.  Keep doing this over and over again.  Sooner or later, you will have found, you will have moved a mountain.

  1. Why is it that every time I read one of your posts, I'm always like, "ME TOO!" I definitely understand that "all or nothing" mentality. For me, I think I keep the end goal or idea too much in mind, and get overwhelmed with "how to get there" since I don't know how it can happen, or can't pin down every step of the way. So good to have the reminder that a little effort at a time can achieve great things, even when you don't know what the end result should be!
