This has been quite an unpredictable beginning to a new year.

I seem to have lost my compass. In some ways, this can be so exciting: a new direction is heading this way!!!
In other ways, this can be terrifying: the future is unknown.

Yesterday I was greeted by more crows than I have ever seen gather in one place. I have always been so challenged when it comes to "estimating". I asked someone to estimate and they said there must have been at least 2000 crows. The tree tops were thick with black as opposed to their bare branch skeletons of winter. Our building was vibrating from their song. The gathering of the crows was not only capturing my attention but capturing the awe of everyone else.

I had to reference the crow totem and here is what it said:

Crows are very social and band together for the good of the group. This is an indication that we need to work with and cooperate with others of like mind in order to bring about blessings for all beings. Crows are wonderful for psychic protection and will literally mob together to drive off negative energy from those they care for.

I am in the midst of tweaking my blog template so thank you for your patience as I try on some new looks. I re-launched my etsy shop this morning and am really excited about it. These new portraits are near and dear to my heart. They capture such distinct expression and personality. With every piece that is completed, I feel I have yet another friend. sheer delight

So here I sit in sheer delight of all that awaits for me this weekend. I made the decision to spend this holiday alone, again, for no other reason but for myself. I LOVE, ADORE, TREASURE time like this. The only other time my inner being experiences this true inspiration and delight is when I am in the midst of a giant body of water or a tall mountain peak. It's super funny how foreign this is to almost everyone I know. They question my motives and doubt my conviction. I laugh at this (on the inside) knowing that this feels as natural to me as breathing. Thank God for breath! I've only been on holiday for 12 hours and counting but I have already made myself a small book where I can document these four sacred days, sat underneath my grandmother's afghan (I am underneath this now), drank two pots of REALLY GOOD coffee, hung my laundry on the line (can you imagine how wonderful it is going to smell when it's dry?), perused film trailers and have made a list of those that inspire me (so grateful to our film writers/makers for creating such bodies of work) and am currently listening to my favorite morning radio program on WUMB. This is the life. I could do this everyday and not tire. REALLY. I have tried it before.

People who know me well, know me for my squeals. I spontaneously squeal at things that give me pleasure (yes, OUT LOUD). Well, I am squealing on the inside and I am sure squealing OUT LOUD will happen this weekend as well. I am SO grateful for knowing myself so well and for the ability to honor what I need to survive and THRIVE. My only wish? People would trust this. I know I am a rare bird (but I don't feel like one, really). If the thought of what I am doing seems too far from any rationale you know, put yourself in my shoes: think of yourself alone today and think how this might feel for you (this is how doing what you are doing today would feel for me!!!!)

With creative expression being my primary language, I need a lot of space (physical, emotional and spiritual). I look forward to sitting in this space and seeing what happens (insert BIG squeal HERE)!

p.s. I just bought some original art that deeply moves me, feels expansive - SO grateful to experience these feelings and so grateful to artists for their ability to express

I haven't done something like this since I returned to full time teaching. At that time, I completed one small collage per day. That commitment actually turned into a body of work titled "Playing with Blocks". Later, those collages were used as a reference for another body of work: larger, abstract paintings.

So now...one portrait/person/personality per day. Hmmmm...

Looking forward to seeing where this leads.

After all, it's all connected and everything seems to complete the circle, right?

That's what I've found.

Summer didn't start until July this year.

As we were driving home this weekend from our last "summer" hoorah,

I felt overwhelmed with gratitude.

I feel grateful for the ability to experience beauty, the journey (as well as the destination), long-filled days of sunshine, great bodies of water and magnificent mountain-sides. I feel grateful for my husband and the time we spend together in these places. We share a similar appreciation and wonder. It is always so liberating and spiritually regenerating.

With such a late start to summer, we have definitely taken advantage of the time and space available. We know this has been a gift - just for us.

I began a more formal approach to a visual journal a few days ago. I have been looking for the right place to practice this. For some reason a blank journal was just...well, too "blank". A couple of summers ago, I used a magazine. I actually attempted to do this again and it just didn't stick (been there, done that). I thought about a phone book, tried that one for size, and finally had an "aha" moment with an atlas. I love a good road trip and on a symbolic level, appreciate the path rather than the destination. What could be a better format?

With a birthday approaching (which is why I am such a summer gal), I have found myself in an emotional "mid life" experience. Over the last 10 years plus, I have really come into my own, embraced and understood myself at an entirely new level. I want to move forward applying all that I've learned while living a slow, rich life filled with meaning and purpose. Of course, I am always a work in progress, though, with a lot of unfinished business.

May I see this as opportunity rather than a lot of hard work.

Crossroads or Dead end?

I vote for crossroads but I feel as though I am at a dead end.

One thing's for sure: I am unclear of any other paths available and I am absolutely sure I want to consciously make a clear decision - no more "experimental" roads. I know what I need and want but am unable to know how to provide this - which is why I feel at the end of this road. I am waiting for the next direction to be made clear and yet, I am unwilling to pave my own way. I want the road to be clear. The road can be unfamiliar. It can (will) have pot holes and speed bumps. The road doesn't need to be established. It can be built as I go, but it needs to meet my needs (and desires) in one way or another as I travel. I am not willing to settle for less. I have settled for less in a lot of ways in my past and I am no longer willing to do so. Life is too short and too precious. What will my next path be? Where will I get "my break"? My break into an authentic life lived with clarity, prosperity and vision? I have worked on creating a strong foundation over the last 10 years and I do feel I will soon be able to lift off to higher ground.

How, where or when this will happen is unclear.

I need to stay clear, present, available to noticing.

I need to commit to standing still at the end of this road, waiting for the new one to begin...somewhere...

My creative endeavors will involve sitting with my work at Art a Whirl in NE Minneapolis this weekend. I am grateful to have a day on the front and back side of this event to recharge my batteries. I am a natural born introvert who loves quiet time, creative time and a lot of reflection on the side (did I mention SUN as well???) Art a Whirl draws a large crowd and I want to be prepared with a full spirit. I am also grateful to have the opportunity to exhibit my work.

I attended a visual journaling workshop yesterday with Mary Bergs. Thank goodness it was in the afternoon (considering the workshop was in the basement of WARM's headquarters) and that I got my fair share of sunshine that morning. With all these variables set in place, I had a wonder-filled time, surprisingly finding clarity and inspiration right away, sensing a direction. I looked up the ancient sign for sun and found this symbol. There may be a series of work here for me, must wait to see...

Sun is as necessary to me as breath. The sun has been so limited here this winter and spring. I feel a depletion that will take a while to fill before I feel an equlibrium. I even took a last minute trip to "the Sunshine State" for 5 days of continuous warmth, blue sky and sunshine.

Praise to the Sun.

Every once in awhile things just fall together in perfect alignment.

The sun is setting, there are daffodils in my sister's compost pile, there's a red weathered table two steps away with evidence of the latest snowfall and... I have my camera. Too many variables for me to orchestrate. Every so often, it all comes together, providing perfect harmony and simultaneous delight - another sign of hope for the future, another reason to keep on keepin' on.

Can you see the whole picture? I never can and always want to (more than anything). I want ALL the answers and I want them to fit together nice and neatly. They never do.

I feel so discouraged when I see bits and pieces of my life here and there and don't know how to fit them together. I find myself in "limbo" most of the time with, what seems like, waves of absolute harmony in between. Although there is nothing settling about this "limbo" state, it can be a catalyst for creativity. It can be an opportunity to stay in the present. I appreciate all the people who encourage this part of my process.

I just spent the last 9 days cleansing, throwing, reorganizing, and filing inventory and materials in my studio. Instead of having a marathon weekend, I just did a little bit at a time. Because of this, I have probably been more thorough then ever. Once again, it is a welcoming, happy place where I plan to drink my morning coffee until the next wave of inspiration moves me. Yesterday I cut out paper hearts (24 to be exact). I was able to re use old paintings and doodles I set aside.

All of the sudden, what was almost recycled has been transformed.

I spent the weekend at my parents' house, going through old photos and favorite childhood books and toys. It's amazing to see myself come full circle: from who I was as a child to who I have become. Our essence is in us, and then, where does it go? I believe, for most of us, it gets lost for awhile in distractions of "shoulds". I have had to work hard at dropping these "shoulds" and embracing my essence.

From this vantage point, I can easily say, it's been worth every step.

OK, the thing is here, this photo looks (to me) like it was taken in the middle of summer. Interestingly enough, this photo was taken this morning, on my kitchen counter as the sun (which we haven't seen very much of this winter) was shining through my kitchen window. It was taken before I walked my dog, Stella, in 4 layers (both top and bottom - no kidding) of clothing (through the sun, yes, but also through the chill of single digit temperatures). I think it's purely safe to say, right now, that I am mourning summer's absence. I am mourning the absence of carefree laughter, energy, heat, bare feet, cloud watching, crickets, sand, wind, waves, heat, porch sitting, long days, an endless variety of fresh produce, heat, etc. etc. etc.

I am mourning this more today than I think I ever truly have and, in this state of Minnesota, I have such a long way to go. The road ahead looks too long to walk. People may encourage me to take a vacation - to visit somewhere warm. The problem is, I want warm to be my life. I don't want a vacation of it. I want to live it and breathe it as part of my everyday life. What, on earth, am I going to do?

I just realized that I actually did this!

At the start of 2010, I listed a number of creative commitments that I was pondering working on over the course of the year. I picked #4 (one piece a month, using a different medium for each) and, although, I eventually forgot about it most of the time, it still visited my mind every once in awhile. Turns out, I didn't need to search a lot for creative inspiration this year and it all just ended up "coming together". Of course, I didn't do it perfectly: It didn't follow a monthly regimen nor did I cover every medium. I think the surprise comes from the idea that absolutely NOTHING was forced. Every image you see here was one of sheer delight and spontaneous creativity. It just so happens each one of these items fulfills the "requirement"! If this isn't manifestation of vision, I don't know what is...

So here I am 5 days into my winter break and still recovering from the stomach flu as well as the most challenging cold sore I have ever had - to date. My equilibrium has been completely thrown off. I want so much to find my direction again. I feel lost. All I feel capable of doing is the next right thing: tiny little bits of pitter pattering around the house as an attempt to stay grounded. Yesterday, I paid bills from the couch and last night, I made this garland out of a selection of envelopes, a way of blessing their travels. I would really like to get in the studio today - just S-T-A-R-T but I feel paralyzed and SO uncomfortable - physically. I want to whine and possibly throw a temper tantrum and, although,

that might be a good tension release,

I still feel such gratitude.

I am SO grateful for:

my commitment to winter solitude (so far)

one complete body of work at the beginning of 2010 and an entirely different body of work to wrap it up

the opportunity to be on Lake Superior this new year (even if it can't be at Fitger's, our usual tradition)

Is it REALLY possible to create our own lives?

A quick response might be "Of course. Isn't that what life if for?"

For some reason, I never felt this freedom.

I never felt this exhilaration.

I never learned this...

I am a slow learner and I am still learning. Imagine that?

Actually, I like it this way...

I love my quiet. I love my solitude.

I like to mix in a few things: good music, good movies, good food.

I love my Grandmother's afghan, good books, and good red wine.

I love the company of my husband and my dog, my cat.

On occasion, I like to be with people of like minds and laugh or eat or discuss the meaning of life, the possibility of what lies ahead, what we are possible of creating.

Now I believe I can create my own life.

But I need help.

I need people who believe me, who respect me, who trust me to help me. These people encourage me (from afar), without any strings attached, to embrace myself and listen to my inner voice

(regardless of how different it may be from ANYONE else's).

Today, I am celebrating my path (where I have come from and where I am going), my ability to create my life, the way that works for me.

Today, I let some OTHER layers of shoulds and expectations fall away.

I am ready to accept the outcome.

My husband and I have been married for seventeen years. We have put much effort into building a life together spiritually, emotionally and financially. Ever since we have married, we have had to pay federal taxes. We save over the course of the year for this expense. We also don't have any children that qualify as dependents AND we just became first time home owners within the last ten years. At 41 years of age, we consider ourselves to be "good" people, attempting to run our daily lives based on authenticity and integrity. We have made a lot of mistakes and we continue to make them. We have only the best intentions when making difficult decisions. My husband and I make less than 70,000 (on a GOOD year) as a household unit. We live in a humble home, humbly furnished and we have a broken dishwasher. We own 2 used cars. We spend our "vacations" camping. And guess what? WE ARE HAPPY and GRATEFUL to have our lives. In fact, WE LOVE OUR LIVES. With all this being said, how can I make it clear that I AM HAPPY TO PAY TAXES for a healthy administration? Healthy in their ability to see the ENTIRE picture and have the courage enough to have it look bad before it gets better? I AM NOT LOOKING FOR A QUICK FIX. I am looking for an administration that takes small steps with integrity while considering what is the greatest good for the most involved. I am terribly disappointed and frustrated with the recent elections (obviously) and have NEVER felt SO OPPOSED to "the majority" of my fellow citizens.

I guess all I can do at this point is "paint it out"...

Can you hear the quiet?

I used to resist it, be afraid of it.

My dear cousin, Liv, is compiling a book. She asked me to contribute by answering this question: "Tapping into your unique strengths and gifts, what is the one thing that young women need to know how to do, and how can they actually do it?"

The phrase that I immediately voiced was "how to be quiet".

Many people have written books on this exact subject but how to sum it up in one page?

All I remember is there was one point in my life when I was fearful of being still, fearful of what I might hear, fearful of what I might remember. There was a point in my life where I couldn't even sit down for a moment without getting up to pick up a piece of lint on the floor.

Some of us may be afraid to stop and listen. It may seem overwhelming or frightening. Be gentle with yourself. I don't know you but I already believe in you and this practice. Sit quietly for a very short amount of time. Start with five minutes.

From as long as I remember, I always tried to make BIG movement, BIG strides. I am not sure if I was born this type of person or if this was something that I learned. What I have learned over time, however, is that the consistent baby steps I take are SO MUCH more powerful. As water drops on a rock, consistently year after year, eventually making an indentation, a large bucket splashed on a rock on occasion doesn't make much difference at all.

When you begin, let the loud voices inside make their voices known. Eventually these voices will stop. They are the fearful voices: the voices of an unkind world, perhaps, the voices of "expectations", the voices of all those "shoulds" and possibly, the voices of guilt or shame. These are such terrible voices but, ironically, they are always with us. It's the noise and our bustling busy-ness that keeps them at bay. The only challenge with this is in order to not hear these voices, we need to keep one step ahead of them. Why not give them a platform from which to speak? Why not listen and then decide to let them go....for a lifetime.

Eventually, over time (and many baby steps), the only voice you will hear in the quiet is the soft, gentle soothing voice of your own, unique beautiful soul. The beauty of the quiet is that this is where our most powerful selves live. One finds that something they were spending so much time searching for "out there", is all inside "right here".

I started small with hearing the quiet. I showed up for it for a small time everyday.

I challenge you to hear the quiet. How powerful we all could be! I challenge you to create the space in your life for five minutes a day where you are quiet. Soon, you will begin to hear the kind, gentle, encouraging voice of yourself. I guarantee this.

I had my first drawing class with Donna Bruni Cox yesterday.

I have had painting sessions with her before but I think it's been a few years.

I (think) I am inspired to paint.

I am so grateful for the kick start I received yesterday.

It is nice to be known, intuitively, especially when one is receiving guidance and instruction. It saves a lot of time and, for those of you that know me, I am ALL about time "reserves".

I crave the ability to create without feeling too tired to stand. For today, I sat with one National Geographic and cut and pasted on the couch while listening to the vacuum hum upstairs (my husband is cleaning, thank God) and Bob Dylan radio (his choice).

I want to do more but I am afraid this is it.

Why do I only use my art bag in the summer?

Is it because the majority of my travel is only done in this season?

So I've been extremely curious about the book How To Be An Explorer of the World by Keri Smith. I looked into it and loved the idea behind it as well as the choice of presentation but it didn't really grab me as some books do*. I figured I'd check out the bibliography in the back and came across a few books. I reserved them from the library. One came in today: Learning by Heart, by Corita Kent and Jan Steward. In my opinion, the cover just doesn't do it justice, and, for now, I have just perused the pages, however, I did come across this and I want to post it NOW:

IMMACULATE HEART COLLEGE

ART DEPARTMENT RULES

Rule 1. Find a place you trust and then try trusting it for awhile.

Rule 2. General duties of a student: Pull everything out of your teacher.

Pull everything out of your fellow students.

Rule 3. General duties of a teacher: Pull everything out of your students.

Rule 4. Consider everything an experiment.

Rule 5. Be self disciplined. This means finding someone wise or smart and choosing to follow them. To be disciplined is to follow in a good way. To be self disciplined is to follow in a better way.

Rule 6. Nothing is a mistake. There's no win and no fail. There's only make.

Rule 7. The only rule is work. If you work it will lead to something. It's the people who do all of the work all the time who eventually catch on to things.

Rule 8. don't try to create and analyze at the same time. They're two different processes.

Rule 9. Be happy whenever you can manage it. Enjoy yourself. It's lighter than you think.

Rule 10. "We're breaking all of the rules. Even our own rules and how do we do that? By leaving plenty of room for x quantities." - John Cage

These "rules" also included some "helpful hints". They are as follows:

Helpful Hints: Always be around. Come and go to everything. Always go to classes. Read anything you can get your hands on. Look at movies carefully, often. Save everything - it might come in handy later. There should be new rules next week.

Of course, I am not taking all these rules to heart nor do I appreciate all the helpful hints. The point is, that this is yet another way of someone or a group of people attempting to do it differently. I appreciate this. I will hold onto these rules in particular: #s 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10. I am extremely fond of rule 9 and love what rule 8 has to say (I always try to combine those two!) If I change the wording in rule 7 from "work" to "play", I'd take that one on too.

No one has to twist my arm to "look at movies carefully, often" (see helpful hints).

I was wondering how this image was going to fit with this entry. I created this image last night, before I picked up this book at the library today.

I guess it could pass as a heart!

I am having a difficult time trying to articulate all of my thoughts over the past few days. First of all, I feel grateful to have had the time to think, ponder. Usually, my life whirls away from me (almost daily) and it is a constant discipline for me to learn how to get it back. Yesterday, I spent the morning walking in the woods along the Mississippi (practically in my backyard). Today, I have spent the morning in the sunshine in my backyard, covered in blankets, reading Brenda Ueland.

Here are some of her thoughts (and my dedications):

For Teri, and her introduction of Brenda Ueland to me in the FIRST place (and, who I believe, truly understands what an introvert I truly am)...

"They do not know that good ideas come slowly, and that

the more clear, tranquil and unstimulated you are,

Last Saturday I found myself sitting in silence for 3 hours in one of my favorite chairs with one of my favorite quilts.

I read this excerpt in Anne Lamott's Plan B a few days ago:

" ...I take in the comfort of my own home when the world has gotten me down, left me incredulous and defeated. At those times, I make a nest for my baby self on the couch in the living room. I stretch out with a comforter and pillows, and magazines, the cat, unguents, and my favorite drink....These are periods of stress and Twilight Zone isolation...Even at - especially at- these times, I hate to stop, though I know that to go faster and faster and do more is to move in the direction of death. Continuous movement argues a wasted life. And so I try to create a cruise ship, to carry me back toward living...it's unbelievable healing; it resets me. Yet it takes time, at least two hours. You can't rush a cruise ship; you can't hurry doing nothing. After awhile, you see the sweetest, most invigorating thing of all: one person tenderly caring for another, even if it's just me taing care of me on my old couch."

I am so grateful to have someone articulate both the need and results of creating "a cruise ship".

I could go on and on about summer but here are a few points:

sunshine, warmth, outdoor eating, porch sitting, camping!, the south shore

summer VACATIONS, summer at night, flip flops, skirts, NO socks!

For the past two years in Minneapolis there has been a blanket of white snow on our world, all winter. I love the peacefulness in this, the minimalism in this the winter blanket I feel I can wrap myself in and reflect, sit, hibernate. I love the light the snow reflects.

OK, so here's my bit with spring: the white snow becomes dirty, the melting begins and the mud is exposed. The world looks dirty (in the early part of this season), the weather changes from day to day (it is so unpredictable!) Yesterday, I had the porch door open, today I have the heat turned up. I can't dress for it and be completely comfortable - ever. I am always too hot or too cold. UGH>

Anyway, I was thinking on my "spring" walk yesterday, that spring is full of unpredictability and I could see that as opportunity.

Who likes predictability?

I went to my OWN 29 Palms today - just for awhile: a good friend, mentor and now, art client. I sat in his home, flopped in one of his chairs and just sat for awhile. It was good. I LOVED this palm I kept noticing to my left. I had to take a picture. I have been to my friends on numerous occasions but hadn't really noticed it until today. Turns out it has a spiritual history. It is clearly VERY happy in this exact place and it was a pleasure to notice.

Seriously...the Modern Cafe in Northeast Minneapolis rocks my world.

We only seem to get there quarterly AND every time, I order the pot roast.

We do, however, mix it up with an appetizer (last night we had some pulled pork, cabbage pancakes on a bed spinach and tomato sauce, a meal in itself

and absolutely delicious).

We remain predictable with our order of their chocolate creme brulee.

The owner is a good friend of Peter's and I love the fun we have catching up with him. He's fun, generous and authentic. I LOVE that.

So I said "when" yesterday and then I woke up this morning

and got ready to get into the studio. At first, I felt a little

of the same (as yesterday afternoon) but knowing

my prime time is always in the early morning,

I thought I'd give it a shot and...

This morning was a flurry!

I finished four paintings this morning.

It isn't the number of paintings that I finished that is

evident that some spark has returned, it's my process while painting.

This is difficult to describe but it involves a flurry of paint

with brush, sometimes with finger tips

(which is why I thought it necessary to give up oils)

quick swooshes of the brush, dashes, dripping of paint,

writing with a tube, working at the easel,

turning the painting around, working upside down,

working on the floor, etc.

It's as though everything else

disappears (most importantly, my inner critic)

and I am completely in the moment.

This is my favorite piece from today.

I have a tendency to want to "push my luck",

to keep going regardless of how tired I am or

how tired my eyes are, even when my inspiration

is GONE just because "I should" make the most of my time.

Today, I stopped after 3.5 hours and tried to go back.

When I had my doubts, I listened and stopped again.

I think this is one of the FIRST times I have done this.

I need to trust: trust that the inspiration and time will

return. It always does.

For some reason when I started painting in the new year,

butterflies made an appearance.

I did "travel with butterflies" this summer.

They were obviously making themselves known to me.

I am attempting a new series titled,

"traveling with butterflies".

I am not really attracted to painting "pretty things"

so there must be another reason I need to do this.

In the midst of a house full of family this holiday, I have been attempting to meditate daily on a vision for my creative endeavors for 2010.

In addition to creating bodies of work (which will continue to happen, I affirm) and participating in exhibits, contributing to galleries, etc, I enjoy having a rhythmic project that both challenges me and creates a structure and framework for the year.

Last year, I committed myself to the 365 project www.flickr.com/photos/karimaxwell/sets/72157616020754394.

I am pondering these ideas for 2010:

1. one painting a month on an intuitively guided theme

2. one self portrait a month (which wouldn't be that fun considering I am participating in the self portrait project http://www.arthousecoop.com/projects/selfportrait and ONE already seems like too much)

3. one color a day in a moleskin

4. one piece a month, using a different medium for each: installation, photography, sculpture, collage, acrylic painting, drawing, textile, oil painting, pastel, mixed media, watercolor and ONE MORE (this one sounds challenging, FUN and "outside the box" for me)

5. continue this blog (this is a given)

6. one photo a week (instead of one a day). I think I want to do this too (a way to ween myself from the zillions of pics I have been used to taking).

Currently, I am leaning towards #4. It sounds like something I want to start

RIGHT NOW.

I think this is a wonder-filled sign of inspiration to come...

Any OTHER ideas out there?

I documented Christmas Day here. What I loved was the slow, turning of events this year. Christmas is usually such a rush. My holiday break doesn't begin until the eve of the 23rd and then we are usually running around trying to get prepared for hosting on the 24th (a big tradition in my family). This year, family wasn't expected to arrive until the afternoon on Christmas Day! How dreamy it was to do a little bit at a time, to take my time, to mill around the house, taking care of odds and ends in the meantime. I just might stick to this schedule EVERY year...

I bounce from one disappointment to another, forgetting that the only person I can really rely on is myself, my spirit self. I lose track of my momentum so quickly, becoming distracted by disappointing experiences (and I am the only one choosing for these experiences to affect me).

I have been flip flopping between old comforts the last week or so. This is so easy for me (and will continue to be a lifelong battle for me, I am sure).

At this moment, I want to choose to put down complacency and old comforts and continue to move forward with vision. I want to identify a mile marker on the road towards my long term vision. Slowly and surely (daily) I need to return to putting one foot in front of the other until I reach it, always keeping my eyes ahead. When my eyes wander to the side, it takes me too long to regain my footing (and my focus).

limitless expansion

Today marks the first day of the time change, usually a time that signifies too much darkness and despair. I LIVE FOR THE LIGHT. Last spring I made a conscious decision to embrace this time. For me, this is a time for nesting. Last year, I spend a lot of time placing "shoulds" upon myself. What will this quiet, dark time bring for me, I wonder? The only words that come to mind are Limitless Expansion. I'll take it... If I listen and follow my inner voice, the possibilities are endless.

lose all inhibitions and just make a mess.

it's so difficult for me to do this. most of the time I get so frustrated with myself because I can feel my own reins pulling me in (and I "obey").

honor the days of creative freedom when

what is "wasted" is just as important as what is left.

trust that this is part of the process, creating another layer of the story.

It is guaranteed and never fails (as much as I try to convince myself otherwise): I need time and space to sit, think, reflect. I can lose ALL perspective without this (within minutes). Why do I put myself in a position to go without? Usually one day alone (mid week) will rejuvenate me. In this space and time, I am experiencing Day 4 of sitting and I could keep going...

Reflection gives me perspective.

This is as necessary to me as breath.

I find that I suffer from black and white thinking. Although I know this about myself, I still find myself going there on more than one occasion. I wish so much this "habit" of thinking could be removed. It has a tendency to take over (the dark side especially) and paralyze me. Thankfully, now, my life is a little more full of color and shades of gray...

mark EVERYDAY of your vacation

I was SO fortunate to experience 10 days of vacation at the close of July. Ten days of freedom from the reality of day to day pressures. I didn't want to forget this sacred time and made every effort to visually document it.
