Delight in the Delicious / Donut Art

This past Saturday, we Delighted in the Delicious with Donuts as our subject.

Our warm up consisted of creating our own donut ornaments.  Students used a palette knife to apply the paint of their choice.  Placing the "real" sprinkles on their donuts was a definite point of interest.

After applying the underpainting to our acrylic painting paper (for a painting activity upon our return), we suited up for our walking field trip to Glam Doll Donuts.  The children LOVE walking by this mural.  They get so excited about the mosaic.  We read the words together.

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? -Mary Oliver

When we returned to the classroom, the children each chose one donut to use as their model.  Before painting, we discussed Wayne Thiebaud's use of color, texture and shadow.

For our next activity, we studied this painting by Eeli-Ethel Polli.  Although, I don't think this piece was painted with donuts in mind (this particular piece is titled, "Painting Rain Brown Pink"), I thought this was a wonderful painting to reference when discussing mixed media.

The children created their own mixed media paintings using soft pastels, watercolor and acrylic paint.
